Tour Overview

Ladakh Sham Valley & Beyond – Alchi, Lamayuru, Leh, Nubra & Pangong

Embark on a deeply immersive 6 Nights / 7 Days journey through Ladakh's most diverse landscapes — from ancient monastery corridors and surreal moonscapes to high-altitude cold deserts and sapphire-blue lakes. This carefully crafted itinerary weaves together the historically rich Sham Valley corridor — featuring Alchi's 1,000-year-old murals and Lamayuru's otherworldly lunar terrain — with the iconic Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso, creating an experience that is both culturally rewarding and visually breathtaking.

Unlike standard Ladakh packages that skip the Sham Valley entirely, this itinerary dedicates a full day to Alchi Monastery, the finest example of early Tibetan Buddhist art in Ladakh, and Lamayuru, one of Ladakh's oldest and most dramatic monasteries perched above eroded clay hills that resemble the surface of the moon. The journey continues north over the legendary Khardung La Pass into Nubra Valley's cold desert dunes and Bactrian camel rides, with an excursion to Turtuk — India's northernmost village — before culminating at the iconic Pangong Lake, whose turquoise waters have captured imaginations worldwide.

Every night is carefully planned for altitude acclimatization, with Leh stays in the beginning and a gradual ascent towards Nubra and Pangong. This itinerary is ideal for travelers who want a complete Ladakh experience — cultural, adventurous, and scenic — within a compact and well-paced 7-day window.

Detailed Program

  • Day 1: Arrival in Leh – Rest & Acclimatization
Upon arrival at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh (3,500 m / 11,500 ft), our representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel. Since Leh is situated at high altitude, the first day is entirely reserved for acclimatization — a non-negotiable part of any safe Ladakh journey. Check into your hotel and rest for the day. Drink plenty of water, avoid heavy meals, and stay indoors or take very short gentle walks. Altitude sickness symptoms such as headache or nausea are common; consult your doctor about Diamox beforehand. In the evening, if feeling well, take a slow stroll through Leh's vibrant main bazaar, browsing Tibetan handicrafts, pashmina stalls, and local eateries. Return to hotel for dinner and overnight rest.
    • Airport to Hotel ~15 km / 30 min
    • Welcome Tea / Dinner
    • Overnight: Leh
  • Day 2: Leh Local Sightseeing – Sangam, Shanti Stupa & Leh Palace
After breakfast, begin a full-day sightseeing tour around Leh. Drive west towards the Indus valley to visit Sangam, the stunning confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers where the two distinct river colours merge dramatically. Continue to Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, a revered Sikh shrine maintained by the Indian Army, followed by a stop at Magnetic Hill — famous for its optical illusion where vehicles appear to roll uphill. Visit the Hall of Fame Museum, a tribute to India's brave soldiers, showcasing Ladakh's military heritage and artefacts. Return to Leh town and ascend to Shanti Stupa for panoramic golden sunset views over the valley, then explore the imposing Leh Palace, a 17th-century royal structure inspired by Tibet's Potala Palace. End the evening with a stroll through Leh Main Market for shopping and street food. Overnight in Leh.
    • Breakfast & Dinner
    • ~90 km / 2.5 hrs total driving
    • Overnight: Leh
  • Day 3: Leh → Alchi Monastery → Lamayuru Moonland
After an early breakfast, set off westward on NH1 along the Indus River into the Sham Valley — one of Ladakh's most underrated and historically significant corridors. Stop at Likir Monastery enroute, then arrive at Alchi, home to one of the most extraordinary monastery complexes in the Buddhist world. Founded in the 11th century by the Tibetan master Rinchen Zangpo, Alchi's temples house remarkably preserved Kashmiri-style frescoes, multi-storey Bodhisattva sculptures, and intricately carved wooden portals — all virtually untouched by the 20th century. Continue driving ~35 km further west to reach Lamayuru, the oldest continuously inhabited monastery in Ladakh. Set atop a hillock above a spectacular eroded landscape of white clay and sand formations that resemble the lunar surface, Lamayuru's setting is among the most dramatic in the entire Himalayas. Explore the monastery and enjoy the sweeping views before returning to Leh or overnighting at a Lamayuru guesthouse.

    • Overnight: Lamayuru or Leh
  • Day 4: Leh → Nubra Valley via Khardung La Pass
After an early breakfast, begin the thrilling drive north over Khardung La Pass at 5,359 m (17,582 ft), one of the highest motorable roads on Earth. The drive offers sensational views of snow-covered Himalayan and Karakoram peaks, winding mountain roads, and vast blue skies. Stop at the top for hot tea, photos, and panoramic views before descending into the wide, fertile Nubra Valley. Known as the Valley of Flowers and historically an important Silk Route junction, Nubra is a dramatic contrast to Leh — a cold desert ringed by the world's highest mountains. Visit Diskit Monastery, the largest monastery in Nubra Valley, featuring a towering 32-metre Maitreya Buddha statue with commanding valley views. Continue to Hunder's golden sand dunes for the quintessential Nubra experience: a camel ride on the resident double-humped Bactrian camels as the sun dips behind the peaks. Check in at hotel or camp. Overnight in Nubra Valley.
    • Breakfast & Dinner
    • ~125 km / 5–6 hrs
    • Overnight: Nubra Valley
  • Day 5: Nubra Valley – Turtuk Village Excursion
After breakfast, embark on a full-day excursion to Turtuk, one of India's northernmost accessible villages, located just a few kilometres from the Line of Control with Pakistan. The scenic drive follows the turquoise Shyok River through a series of remote Balti villages and wild mountain terrain. Turtuk was part of Pakistan-administered territory until the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, and its distinct Balti culture, language, and architecture set it apart from the rest of Ladakh. Explore its narrow stone-paved lanes, wooden bridges over mountain streams, traditional homes, and terraced apricot orchards (spectacularly in bloom in July). Interact with warm local residents and visit the small Balti heritage museum. On clear days, the towering peaks of the Karakoram range — including views towards Siachen — make for breathtaking photography. Drive back to Nubra Valley in the evening. Overnight at hotel or camp.
    • Breakfast & Dinner
    • ~180 km round trip / 6–7 hrs
    • Overnight: Nubra Valley
  • Day 6: Nubra Valley → Pangong Lake via Shyok Route
After breakfast, check out and head towards the world-famous Pangong Tso via the Shyok valley route — arguably one of the most scenic drives in Ladakh, following the river through remote villages, dramatic gorges, and changing mountain colours. Upon arriving at Pangong Tso (4,350 m / 14,270 ft), be prepared for one of India's most breathtaking vistas: a vast high-altitude lake stretching 134 km — two-thirds into Tibet — whose waters shift through shades of azure, cobalt, and emerald throughout the day depending on light and wind. Featured in several Bollywood films and made iconic by '3 Idiots', Pangong is now a bucket-list destination for travellers worldwide. Spend the afternoon walking the shoreline, photographing the lake's ever-changing colours against the barren Changchenmo mountains, and soaking in the rare silence of one of the world's highest saltwater lakes. Witness a stunning sunset and check into your lakeside camp or cottage. Overnight at Pangong Lake.
    • Breakfast & Dinner

    • Overnight: Pangong Lake
  • Day 7: Pangong → Leh via Thiksey & Hemis – Departure
Rise early to watch the sunrise paint Pangong's waters in gold and crimson — one of the most memorable mornings in the Himalayas. After breakfast, begin the return drive to Leh over Chang La Pass (5,360 m), stopping at the top for photos. Descend into the Indus valley and visit two of Ladakh's most impressive monasteries: Thiksey Monastery, a stunning 12-storey gompa resembling a miniature Potala Palace with a 15-metre Maitreya Buddha in its chamber, and Hemis Monastery, the largest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh, home to priceless Buddhist relics, ancient thangkas, and the famous Hemis Festival held every summer. Arrive in Leh by late afternoon with time for final souvenir shopping in the bazaar — pashmina shawls, prayer wheels, Tibetan jewellery, and local dried fruit make wonderful keepsakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about your Ladakh trip

The best time for this tour is from May to September when all roads including NH1 to Lamayuru, Khardung La to Nubra, and the Shyok route to Pangong remain open. July and August offer the warmest temperatures and lushest landscapes, while June and September are ideal for fewer crowds and clearer skies. The Hemis Festival (usually June/July) is a bonus if your dates align.

Yes — acclimatization is absolutely essential and non-negotiable. Leh sits at 3,500 m (11,500 ft) and altitude sickness (AMS) can affect anyone regardless of fitness level. Day 1 is reserved entirely for rest. Drink 3–4 litres of water, avoid alcohol, eat light, and avoid strenuous activity. Consult your doctor about Diamox (Acetazolamide) before travel. Rushing acclimatization can ruin or end your trip.

Indian nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, and Turtuk village (a separate protected area permit). Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) for all restricted zones. These are typically arranged by your tour operator and require identity documents. Permits must be carried during travel and shown at checkpoints. We arrange all permits as part of our package inclusions.

Accommodation varies by location: comfortable hotels in Leh (en-suite bathrooms, warm water, heating), a guesthouse in Lamayuru (basic but clean), hotels or luxury tented camps in Nubra Valley (some with attached bathrooms and dining halls), and a lakeside camp or cottage at Pangong (shared/attached bathrooms, blankets provided — temperatures drop sharply at night). All accommodations are pre-inspected and verified.

Alchi is unique in all of Ladakh because unlike most monasteries perched on hilltops, it stands at valley floor level beside the Indus River. Founded in the 11th century by the great translator Rinchen Zangpo, its temples house the finest examples of early Kashmiri Buddhist art in existence — large wall frescoes and multi-metre wooden Bodhisattva statues that survived centuries untouched. Art historians regard it as comparable to cave paintings at Dunhuang. It is a UNESCO tentative listed site.

Yes — staying overnight at Pangong is specifically planned to give you both sunset (Day 6 evening) and sunrise (Day 7 morning) views. The lake dramatically changes colour through the day — deep cobalt at midday, emerald in afternoon light, and shimmering gold and pink at sunrise and sunset. Clear Ladakhi nights also offer exceptional stargazing with minimal light pollution. Bring warm layers as temperatures drop to 5–10°C even in summer nights.

Mobile network (BSNL and Jio) is available in Leh town and some parts of the Sham Valley. However, network is patchy or absent in Nubra Valley and Turtuk, and almost non-existent at Pangong Lake. Foreign SIM cards do not work in Ladakh — get a local BSNL prepaid SIM at Leh. Consider this a digital detox opportunity and inform family / colleagues in advance of your connectivity limitations.

Consult your physician 2–3 weeks before travel. Key precautions include: taking Diamox (Acetazolamide) from the day before arrival if recommended by your doctor, staying well-hydrated throughout the trip, carrying basic altitude sickness medication, avoiding alcohol for the first 48 hours, eating light easy-to-digest meals, and carrying sunscreen (SPF 50+) and UV-protective sunglasses. People with heart conditions, severe asthma, or pregnancy should seek specific medical advice before booking.
