πŸ™ Jai Mata Di β€” About Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji is one of the most sacred and widely revered shrines in India, dedicated to the Divine Mother in her form as Mata Vaishno Devi β€” a manifestation of the combined power of Mata Mahakali, Mata Mahalakshmi, and Mata Mahasaraswati. The shrine is located at 5,200 ft (1,585 m) in the Trikuta mountains of the Reasi district, Jammu & Kashmir.

The holy cave β€” Bhawan β€” houses three naturally formed rock formations called Pindis representing the three forms of the Mother Goddess. Every year, over 8–10 million pilgrims undertake the Yatra, making it one of the most visited religious shrines in the world. The shrine is managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SSSB) and is open to devotees throughout the year, 24 hours a day.

Tour Overview

Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra – 2 Nights / 3 Days from Jammu or Katra

This 2 Nights / 3 Days package offers a complete and comfortable pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, beginning from either Jammu (for pilgrims arriving by rail or flight) or directly from Katra (the base town for the Yatra, 50 km from Jammu). The package is structured for pilgrims who wish to undertake the Yatra at a comfortable, unhurried pace β€” with time for Jammu's own sacred sites, proper rest at Katra before the climb, and a full darshan experience at Bhawan followed by the essential visit to Bhairavnath Temple.

The Yatra to Bhawan can be completed either by the traditional foot trek (13 km from Katra via Banganga and Adhkuwari) or by helicopter service (from Katra helipad to Sanjichhat, followed by a 2.5 km walk to Bhawan). Both options are available within this package. The foot trek is deeply fulfilling for those able to undertake it β€” the path passes through forested mountain terrain, multiple streams, prayer points, and the ancient Adhkuwari Cave β€” while the helicopter option makes the Yatra accessible to senior citizens and those with physical limitations.

The itinerary includes an optional Jammu city sightseeing day covering the Raghunath Temple, Bahu Fort, and the Ranbireshwar Temple β€” sacred sites that set the spiritual tone before the main Yatra. A full overnight at Bhawan (or descent same day depending on the pilgrim's preference) ensures an unhurried darshan and the opportunity to attend the early morning Aarti. Return on Day 3 after Bhairavnath darshan and transfer back to Jammu for departure.

Detailed Programme

  • Day 1 Arrival Jammu  Β·  City Darshan & Drive to Katra Katra

Arrive at Jammu Tawi Railway Station or Jammu Airport. Our representative meets you and transfers you to your hotel for freshening up. Jammu β€” the 'City of Temples' β€” is the winter capital of Jammu & Kashmir and a sacred city in its own right, home to over 1,000 temples and the starting point for the Vaishno Devi Yatra. Most pilgrims begin their journey spiritually here before proceeding to Katra.

Raghunath Temple β€” the largest temple complex in northern India, built by Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1835 and completed by Maharaja Ranbir Singh. The complex contains seven connected temples dedicated to Lord Rama and various incarnations of Lord Vishnu, with walls lined with Shaligram stones and gold-plated interiors. This is the ideal first stop to seek the blessings of Lord Rama before undertaking Mata's Yatra.

Ranbireshwar Temple β€” a magnificent Shiva temple built in 1883 by Maharaja Ranbir Singh, home to a towering 7.5-foot Shiva Lingam and twelve crystal Shiva Lingams, each nearly 2 feet high. The temple's architecture is striking and the spiritual atmosphere deeply serene. Continue to Bahu Fort and Bave Wali Mata Temple β€” the fort stands on the bank of the Tawi River and houses the ancient Kali temple that is one of the oldest shrines in the Jammu region. Excellent views of the Tawi River and city from the fort ramparts.

Visit Peer Kho Cave Temple β€” a naturally occurring cave on the banks of the Tawi River enshrining a Shiva Lingam, believed to be the meditation spot of Peer Baba. After the city tour, proceed to Katra (50 km / ~1.5 hrs) β€” the base town for the Vaishno Devi Yatra, nestled at the foothills of the Trikuta mountains. On arrival, check into your hotel and collect your Yatra Parchi (mandatory registration slip issued by SSSB) from the Yatra Registration Counter near the bus stand. Attend the evening aarti at the Banganga temple near the Yatra start point. Have a light, sattvic dinner and rest early β€” the Yatra begins at dawn tomorrow.

Yatra Parchi is mandatory. It is issued free of charge at registration counters in Katra (near the bus terminal, open 24 hours). Carry your photo ID (Aadhaar / Passport). Our representative will assist you in collecting the Parchi on the evening of Day 1.
    • Arrival: Jammu Tawi / Airport
    • Raghunath Β· Ranbireshwar Β· Bahu Fort Β· Peer Kho
    • Jammu β†’ Katra: ~50 km / 1.5 hrs
    • Lunch & Dinner
    • Overnight: Katra Hotel
  • Day 2 Katra β†’ Yatra β†’ Bhawan Darshan & Bhairavnath Temple Bhawan Darshan

The most sacred and central day of the pilgrimage. Wake up at 3:00–4:00 AM, bathe, wear clean clothes (traditionally white or red), perform your morning prayers, and proceed to the Yatra start point at Banganga (1 km from Katra town centre). The atmosphere at the trail head even before dawn is electric β€” thousands of pilgrims gather here, filling the air with chants of "Jai Mata Di", the sound of bells, and the fragrance of flowers and incense.

Trek Route (Foot Yatra): The traditional trail from Katra to Bhawan is approximately 13 km and takes 4–6 hours at a comfortable pilgrim's pace. The route passes through Banganga (1.5 km from Katra β€” the stream where pilgrims bathe feet and receive blessings), Charan Paduka (3 km β€” a rock enshrining the holy footprints of Mata), Adhkuwari (6 km β€” a highly sacred intermediate cave temple where Mata is believed to have meditated for nine months; short darshan available), and then continues upward through the beautiful Himkoti helipad area to Bhawan (13 km from Katra / 5,200 ft). Pony, palki (palanquin), and pithu (porter) services are available throughout the trek route for those who need assistance β€” charges are government-fixed and payable separately.

Helicopter Route: For those opting for helicopter darshan, proceed to Katra Helipad by 6:00 AM for your allocated slot. The flight to Sanjichhat (at 6,200 ft, above Bhawan) takes approximately 8 minutes. From Sanjichhat helipad, a well-maintained 2.5 km walk downhill leads to Bhawan β€” this section takes 30–45 minutes and passes through a corridor of shops, langars, and scenic mountain views. Return helicopter service is available from Sanjichhat throughout the day.

Bhawan Darshan: The holy cave entrance at Bhawan is narrow and pilgrims queue in single file for darshan of the three Pindis β€” the natural rock formations that embody the three forms of the Goddess. A small stream of glacial water called Charan Ganga flows through the cave, which pilgrims wade through as a ritual purification. The darshan itself is brief β€” 1–2 minutes inside the cave β€” but the experience of receiving the blessings of all three forms of the Divine Mother in one sanctum is profound and moving. Prasad is distributed at the cave exit.

After Bhawan darshan, do not descend immediately. The Yatra is considered incomplete without visiting Bhairavnath Temple, located approximately 1.5 km above Bhawan on the same trail at Bhairavghati. According to the legend, Bhairavnath (an incarnation of a demon transformed into a devotee) was slain by Mata Vaishno Devi at this spot, and his final wish was that all pilgrims would visit his shrine after Bhawan darshan β€” thereby granting them the complete blessing of the Yatra. The temple offers spectacular panoramic views of the entire Trikuta mountain range. Descend back to Bhawan after Bhairavnath darshan for overnight rest at the SSSB rest house, dharamshala, or return to Katra if time permits.

Langar (Free Community Kitchen) is available throughout the Yatra route β€” at Banganga, Adhkuwari, Bhawan, and Bhairavnath β€” run by various religious organisations. The food is simple, hot, and served to all pilgrims free of charge. Accept it with gratitude as Mata's prasad.
No non-vegetarian food, alcohol, or tobacco is permitted on the Yatra route. SSSB strictly enforces this rule. Carry only sattvic food or rely on the langar.
    • Start: 3:30–4:00 AM from Banganga
    • Trek: ~13 km / 4–6 hrs  |  Heli: ~8 min + 2.5 km walk
    • Bhawan: 5,200 ft  |  Bhairavnath: 6,200 ft
    • Breakfast (Katra) / Langar on trail / Dinner
    • Overnight: Bhawan / Katra (pilgrim's choice)
  • Day 3 Descent to Katra  Β·  Drive to Jammu & Departure Departure

If you stayed overnight at Bhawan, wake before dawn for the Mangal Aarti at 4:00 AM β€” attending the opening aarti of the day is one of the most spiritually charged moments of the entire Yatra. The sound of the priests' prayers, the ringing of bells, the fragrance of incense, and the glow of oil lamps in the pre-dawn cave light create an experience that stays with pilgrims for a lifetime. This is why the overnight at Bhawan is strongly recommended.

After attending the aarti and a final darshan, begin the descent from Bhawan to Katra (approximately 12 km / 3–4 hours by foot, or helicopter from Sanjichhat). The descent, while easier on the lungs, requires care on the knees β€” trekking poles or a pony are advisable for those with joint concerns. The same route passes Bhairavnath (if not visited previous evening), then down through Adhkuwari, Charan Paduka, and Banganga back to Katra.

On arrival at Katra, a hot bath, a proper meal, and a cup of Kashmiri kahwa at one of the many cafΓ©s is a well-earned reward. Katra's main market offers a good selection of religious souvenirs, religious literature, rudraksha malas, copper prayer items, and dry fruits to take home as prasad and gifts for those who could not make the journey.

After rest and lunch, drive back to Jammu (50 km / ~1.5 hrs). Depending on your onward travel time, there may be opportunity for a final visit to any missed temple or a short stop at the Mata Kol Kandoli temple or the famous Peer Mitha sweet shops of Jammu for local sweets. Transfer to Jammu Tawi Railway Station or Jammu Airport for your journey home. Carry the blessings of Mata Vaishno Devi in your heart. Jai Mata Di.

    • Mangal Aarti: 4:00 AM (if at Bhawan)
    • Descent: ~12 km / 3–4 hrs or helicopter
    • Katra β†’ Jammu: ~50 km / 1.5 hrs
    • Breakfast & Lunch
    • Transfer to Jammu Tawi / Airport

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about your Ladakh trip

The Amarnath Yatra season is officially declared by SASB each year and typically runs from late June to mid-August, ending on Raksha Bandhan (Shravan Purnima). The ice Shivling is at its most impressive near the full moon of Shravan month (usually July–August), when it reaches its maximum height. Early July is considered ideal β€” the Yatra has just begun, crowds are manageable, and the ice Shivling is well-formed. Avoid going in the first and last week of the season when the Shivling may be small or deteriorating. Helicopter slots fill up very quickly β€” book 2–3 months in advance.

Every pilgrim must have: (1) SASB Yatra Registration Permit β€” obtained online at sacredshrines.net or through designated bank branches (J&K Bank, PNB, Yes Bank and others). (2) Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) β€” issued by SASB-authorised doctors certifying fitness for high-altitude pilgrimage. This is mandatory and must be obtained within 3 months of the Yatra date. (3) Valid photo ID (Aadhaar, Passport or Voter ID). (4) Recent passport photograph. We assist with all documentation and coordinate the medical certificate from authorised doctors in your city. Foreign nationals require prior government clearance β€” contact us well in advance.

The helicopter flies from either Neelgrath Helipad (near Pahalgam) or Baltal Helipad to Panjtarni at 3,657 m β€” a journey of 8–10 minutes. Helicopters carry 5–6 passengers per trip and operate from approximately 6 AM to 5 PM. At Panjtarni, pilgrims walk ~1–1.5 km to the cave entrance. The total time at the cave side (including walk, queue, darshan, and return) is typically 2–3 hours. Return flights are available throughout the day β€” there is no fixed return time. Helicopter services are weather-dependent β€” flights may be delayed or cancelled due to cloud, rain, or strong winds without prior notice. SASB reschedules affected pilgrims as capacity allows.

SASB requires a Compulsory Health Certificate and restricts the following from undertaking the Yatra: persons with uncontrolled hypertension, heart conditions, severe asthma, epilepsy, or active tuberculosis; those who have had a recent heart attack or stroke; and pregnant women after 6 weeks of pregnancy. Children below 13 years and persons above 75 years are also restricted. Even for those who pass the health certificate, the helicopter darshan involves a 1–1.5 km walk at 3,657 m which requires basic ambulatory ability. Oxygen cylinders are available at Panjtarni and the cave for emergencies. Consult your doctor well before booking.

Clothing: Warm layering is essential regardless of the month β€” temperatures at the cave can be 3–8Β°C even in peak summer. Pack: thermal underlayer, warm fleece or sweater, a windproof outer jacket, warm socks, sturdy closed shoes or trekking shoes (no sandals or heels on the approach path). A waterproof poncho or light rain jacket is important as weather changes rapidly. Essentials to carry: Valid permits and ID (original + photocopies), personal medications, sunscreen SPF 50+, sunglasses, energy snacks (dry fruit, glucose biscuits), personal water bottle, small torch, hand sanitiser, and a warm head covering. Do NOT carry heavy baggage β€” only a day pack. Lockers are available at Panjtarni to store belongings before entering the cave.

Helicopter operations are strictly weather-dependent and SASB-regulated. If flights are cancelled due to cloud, fog, heavy rain, or strong winds, SASB automatically reschedules affected pilgrims to the next available slot β€” usually the following day. In most cases pilgrims remain at the base camp overnight and fly the next morning. We include a contingency buffer day in our package planning, but if weather disruption extends beyond 1 day, additional accommodation and meals will be charged at actuals. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers pilgrimage trip disruption. Our ground team stays in touch with SASB and the helipad operators to keep you informed in real time.

Yes β€” our Premium category includes the option of staying in a traditional Kashmiri houseboat on Dal Lake. Dal Lake's houseboats are among the most unique accommodations in India β€” moored wooden structures with intricately carved interiors, furnished bedrooms, attached bathrooms, and a dining room, serviced by a small Shikara (water taxi) that ferries you to and from the shore. They are particularly atmospheric at night when the lake is still and the lights of Srinagar reflect on the water. A small Shikara is available 24 hours. The morning view from a houseboat veranda β€” mountains, mist, and lotus flowers β€” is genuinely unforgettable. Book the Premium package and specify houseboat preference at the time of booking.

Srinagar has excellent Jio, Airtel, and BSNL 4G connectivity. Pahalgam town has reasonable connectivity. Baltal has limited BSNL signal only. Panjtarni and the cave area have no reliable mobile signal. Inform your family and contacts of the Day 3 itinerary and expected offline hours before you depart for the base camp. The government and SASB operate satellite communication systems in the cave area for emergencies. Our ground team in Srinagar remains reachable throughout the tour.
