Tour Overview

Vaishno Devi Yatra + Shivkhori Cave + Patnitop Hill Station – 4 Nights 5 Days

This 4 Nights / 5 Days package combines the spiritual power of two of Jammu's most sacred shrines with the refreshing beauty of one of its finest hill stations — creating a journey that nourishes the soul, the body, and the senses in equal measure. It is the ideal tour for families, couples, and pilgrim groups who wish to extend their Vaishno Devi trip into a broader experience of the Jammu region.

The pilgrimage portion begins with the iconic Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra from Katra — the 12–14 km mountain trek (or helicopter option) to the cave shrine of the Goddess, including the essential post-darshan visit to Bhairon Nath Temple. From Katra, the package moves to Shivkhori — a dramatically different kind of shrine. Rather than a built temple, Shivkhori is a naturally occurring cave approximately 200 metres deep in the limestone hills of Reasi district, whose interior walls have formed into extraordinary natural representations of Lord Shiva, Parvati, the Nandi bull, the Ganges, and other divine symbols over thousands of years. The cave is considered one of the holiest natural Shiva shrines in India and remains largely unknown to travellers outside the Jammu region.

The final destination is Patnitop — a serene alpine meadow at 2,024 m on the Udhampur–Ramban stretch of the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway. Patnitop's rolling grasslands, dense pine and deodar forests, snow-capped views of the Pir Panjal range, and cool clean air offer a complete contrast to the heat of the plains and the exertion of the pilgrimage — a restorative finale before the return to Jammu. Activities available include paragliding, nature walks, local market shopping, and simply sitting in an alpine meadow watching clouds move across the mountains.

  • Darshan at Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan — the three sacred Pindis of Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi & Maha Saraswati

  • Bhairon Nath Temple visit — spiritually essential to complete the Vaishno Devi Yatra

  • Shivkhori Cave Temple — a 200-metre natural Shiva cave with extraordinary rock formations of divine significance

  • Patnitop alpine meadow — pine forests, snow-peak views, paragliding, and Nathatop viewpoint

  • Jammu sightseeing — Raghunath Temple, Bahu Fort, Mubarak Mandi Palace & Peer Khoh

  • Flexible trek / helicopter / pony / palki options for Vaishno Devi — suitable for all ages and fitness levels

Detailed Programme

  • Day 1 Arrival at Jammu / Katra  ·  Jammu Sightseeing & Katra Check-in Katra

Arrive at Jammu Tawi Railway Station or Jammu Airport (Satwari). Our representative meets you at the arrival gate and the journey begins. Jammu — the 'City of Temples' — serves as both the gateway city and a rewarding destination in its own right, and Day 1's programme makes full use of the time before the drive to Katra.

    Raghunath Temple, Jammu

One of the largest temple complexes in North India, built between 1835 and 1860 by Maharaja Gulab Singh and Maharaja Ranbir Singh of the Dogra dynasty. The main shrine enshrines Lord Rama (Raghunath) in the sanctum, surrounded by seven interconnected temples dedicated to different forms and stories of the Ramayana. The inner walls of the sanctum are lined with gold sheets — an extraordinary display of royal devotion. The complex also houses over 300 shaligrams (sacred stones) and numerous smaller shrines. The temple complex is always alive with pilgrims, priests, and the fragrance of flowers and incense. Allow 45 minutes.

Bahu Fort & Bahu Devi Temple

The oldest fort in Jammu, perched on a rocky outcrop above a bend in the Tawi River. The fort's origins are attributed to Raja Bahulochan and it has been rebuilt and expanded over many centuries, most recently by the Dogra rulers. Within the fort complex stands the revered Bahu Devi (Kali Mata) Temple — one of the most important Shakti shrines in Jammu, drawing particularly large crowds on Tuesdays and Sundays. The fort terrace offers panoramic views over the Tawi River and the Jammu cityscape.

    Mubarak Mandi Palace Complex

The historic royal palace of the Dogra kings, a sprawling complex of buildings constructed in phases from the 18th to the early 20th century in a remarkable fusion of architectural styles — Baroque European, Rajput, and Mughal. Several wings are now open as museums: the Dogra Art Museum houses an outstanding collection of Pahari miniature paintings, Basholi paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, royal arms, and objects d'art from the Dogra period. The complex is being progressively restored and is one of Jammu's most significant cultural sites.

After Jammu sightseeing, drive to Katra (48 km / ~1.5 hrs). Check in at your hotel, freshen up, and head to the SMVDSB Registration Counter at Banganga for your Yatra Parchi (we assist with this). Visit the illuminated base temple and attend the evening aarti. Early dinner and rest — the Yatra begins before dawn.

Yatra Parchi: Registration is mandatory before the trek. We process this in advance online — your slip will be provided at the hotel on Day 1 evening. Carry it with your photo ID at all times during the trek.
    • Jammu pickup / Katra arrival
    • Raghunath Temple · Bahu Fort · Mubarak Mandi
    • Jammu → Katra ~48 km / 1.5 hrs
    • Welcome Tea / Dinner
    • Overnight: Katra
  • Day 2 Vaishno Devi Darshan  ·  Ardhkuwari · Bhawan · Bhairon Temple Yatra Day

The most sacred day of the tour. Wake between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM — early starts are strongly recommended for cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and a morning arrival at the Bhawan. Have a light pre-trek meal (tea, biscuits, fruit) and dress in comfortable layered clothing with sturdy footwear.

    Banganga — Sacred River Crossing

The Yatra formally begins at Banganga (~3 km from Katra), where the sacred river is considered purifying — pilgrims traditionally wash feet here before the climb. Battery cars operate from Katra to Banganga for elderly or differently-abled pilgrims. Your Yatra Parchi is checked at the Banganga gate; without it, entry is denied.

    Charan Paduka (5 km)

A small but important shrine marking the holy footprints of Mata Vaishno Devi imprinted on a rock. According to legend, Mata rested here during her journey to the cave. A peaceful rest point with a small temple, tea stalls, and the first wide views of the Katra valley opening up below.

Ardhkuwari (8 km) — Garbh Joon Cave

The name translates to 'half-way house' and this is both a physical and spiritual midpoint. The Garbh Joon Cave here is a sacred narrow 15-metre passage-cave where Mata Vaishno Devi is said to have meditated for 9 months in hiding. Devotees crawl through the low, narrow tunnel as a symbolic act of rebirth and spiritual transformation. There is a large dharamshala, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine board langar (free hot meal), medical facility, and clean restrooms at Ardhkuwari — the ideal point to rest and refuel.

Bhawan — Holy Cave Shrine (12 km)

The sacred cave complex houses the three natural rock Pindis of Mata Vaishno Devi: Maha Kali (the dark Pindi on the left), Maha Lakshmi (the four-armed central form), and Maha Saraswati (the fair Pindi on the right). Leave shoes, mobile phones, cameras, and leather items at the SMVDSB cloak room before entering. The darshan experience — standing before these ancient, naturally-formed rock manifestations of the Goddess, amid the ringing of bells, fragrance of flowers, and chanting of hundreds of pilgrims — is deeply moving and unlike any other religious experience. Collect prasad, Charanamrit (holy water), and a sacred chunri from the counters. Langar is available nearby.

Bhairon Nath Temple (14.5 km — 6,719 ft)

A 2.5 km ascent above the Bhawan — accessible on foot or by ropeway gondola. The Bhairon Nath Temple marks the site where Mata slew the demon Bhairon Nath, who repented at his death and received Mata's blessing. Visiting Bhairon Temple is considered spiritually essential to complete the Yatra — pilgrims who skip it are said to have an incomplete darshan. Receive the triangular red prasad cloth here. Return to Bhawan, then begin the descent to Katra.

Arrive back in Katra by late evening. Hot dinner and rest. The body will be tired — let it recover. Tomorrow's journey to Shivkhori is a drive, not a trek. Jai Mata Di.

Helicopter Option: Pilgrims opting for helicopter fly Katra → Sanjichhat (~8 min, approx. ₹1,050–₹1,250 per person one-way per SMVDSB rates). This skips Banganga to Sanjichhat. A 2 km walk to Bhawan and the Bhairon Temple visit remain. Inform us at booking.
Pony / Palki: Available throughout the route. Palki (palanquin) is ideal for very elderly or differently-abled pilgrims. All operators are SMVDSB-licensed. Book at official counters only.
    • Start: 2:00–4:00 AM
    • Total trek ~26–28 km both ways
    • Bhawan: 5,200 ft · Bhairon: 6,719 ft
    • Langar enroute / Dinner at hotel
    • Overnight: Katra
  • Day 3 Katra → Shivkhori Cave Temple  ·  The Natural Shiva Sanctuary Shivkhori

After breakfast, check out from Katra and drive to Shivkhori (~80 km / ~2 hrs) via the Reasi–Ransoo route through the Chenab valley. The road passes through beautiful river gorges and forested hillsides before arriving at the Shivkhori base village of Pouni, from where a 3 km walk or pony ride leads to the cave entrance.

🕉 About Shivkhori — The Cave of Lord Shiva

Shivkhori (meaning 'Shiva's Cave') is a naturally occurring limestone cave approximately 200 metres deep in the Ransoo range of Reasi district, discovered by local shepherds and brought to wider attention in the modern era. The cave is considered to be as naturally miraculous as Amarnath — its interior walls, ceiling, and floor have formed over thousands of years of water seepage and mineral deposition into representations that devotees recognise as Lord Shiva (a large natural Shivalingam), Goddess Parvati, the Nandi bull, the sacred Ganges river flowing from Shiva's matted hair, and various other divine symbols — all entirely natural formations without any human carving. The cave also contains natural formations resembling the Panch Pandavas, Draupadi, and scenes from the Mahabharata. The cave maintains a consistent cool temperature of approximately 18°C year-round. It is one of the least-known but most visually and spiritually remarkable shrines in northern India.

The walk from the base to the cave entrance (3 km) passes through a forested hillside path with small shops, prasad stalls, and the constant flow of pilgrims. The path is well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels; ponies are available for those who prefer not to walk. Upon reaching the cave entrance, remove footwear and enter the naturally air-conditioned interior. The cave narrows and widens in sections — low passages require bending, adding to the atmosphere of entering a sacred natural space rather than a constructed temple. The main natural Shivalingam, naturally lit by the play of the single overhead lamp, stands in the deepest accessible chamber of the cave surrounded by naturally-formed walls of calcite and limestone. The atmosphere inside — cool, damp, other-worldly — is unlike any built temple.

After Shivkhori darshan, return to the base and have lunch at one of the local dhabas (the local Rajma Chawal and Kadhi Chawal are excellent). Drive to your overnight accommodation in Shivkhori / Reasi town or proceed to a hotel in nearby Udhampur depending on the itinerary option selected. Dinner and overnight.

Cave entry: Footwear not permitted inside the cave. The interior has sections requiring you to bend or crouch — not recommended for pilgrims with severe knee or back problems. Torch/phone light is permitted. The walk inside the cave is approximately 400–500 metres to the main Shivalingam and back.
    • Breakfast & Dinner
    • Katra → Shivkhori ~80 km / 2 hrs
    • Base to cave: 3 km walk / 45 min
    • Cave depth: ~200 m
    • Overnight: Shivkhori / Reasi / Udhampur
  • Day 4 Shivkhori → Patnitop Hill Station  ·  Forests, Meadows & Mountain Views Patnitop

After breakfast, drive from Shivkhori / Udhampur northward up the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway to Patnitop (~60–80 km / 1.5–2 hrs depending on start point). The road climbs steadily through the Udhampur district, with views growing more dramatic as altitude increases — terraced farms give way to forests of pine, oak, and deodar, and the air noticeably freshens as you approach the Patnitop plateau.

    🌲 About Patnitop — Jammu's Alpine Retreat

Patnitop (2,024 m / 6,640 ft) is a beautiful alpine meadow situated on the Udhampur–Ramban section of NH44, the historic Jammu–Srinagar National Highway. Set above the Chenab valley, it is a gently rolling plateau of open grassland surrounded by dense forests of pine (chir and blue pine), deodar, oak, and rhododendron, with unobstructed views of the Pir Panjal and greater Himalayan ranges to the north. In winter (December–February), Patnitop receives snowfall and is a popular snow destination from Jammu. In summer and autumn, it is a cool, fragrant, and visually stunning hill station — the temperature hovering between 15–22°C even in peak summer, offering blessed relief from Jammu's plains heat.

    Nathatop Viewpoint (2,730 m)

Drive or walk the 7 km road from Patnitop to Nathatop — the highest accessible point in the area at 2,730 m (8,957 ft). On clear days, the panoramic view from Nathatop is extraordinary: the snow-dusted ridgelines of the Pir Panjal stretching across the entire northern horizon, the deep Chenab gorge below, and the forested slopes of the Shivalik range to the south. In winter Nathatop has the best snow accumulation in the Patnitop area and a rudimentary ski slope. Allow 1–1.5 hours for the Nathatop excursion.

    Paragliding at Patnitop

Patnitop has emerged as one of J&K's popular paragliding destinations, with experienced operators offering tandem flights over the meadow and pine forests with views of the Himalayan ranges. Flights are typically 10–15 minutes and require no prior experience — the pilot handles everything. Available seasonally (best May–October) subject to weather. Cost approximately ₹800–₹1,200 per person (paid directly to operators). An exhilarating option after two days of pilgrimage.

Sanasar Lake & Meadow (25 km from Patnitop)

An optional excursion (if time permits) to Sanasar — a beautiful bowl-shaped alpine meadow at 2,050 m centred on a small natural lake. Sanasar is less visited than Patnitop, more pastoral, and arguably more scenic. The meadow is surrounded by cedar forests and the lake reflects the surrounding hills. A pleasant 1–2 hour diversion for those who wish to explore deeper into the Patnitop plateau.

Spend the afternoon at leisure in Patnitop — walk the meadows, explore the local market for Kashmiri walnuts, dry fruits, and honey, or simply sit on a rock in a pine forest and breathe. Dinner at the hotel with views across the forest canopy. The nights at Patnitop are cool and starlit. Overnight in Patnitop.

    • Breakfast & Dinner
    • Shivkhori → Patnitop ~60–80 km / 1.5–2 hrs

    • Overnight: Patnitop
  • Day 5 Patnitop → Jammu  ·  Peer Khoh · Amar Mahal & Departure Departure

Rise early and step out for a final sunrise walk across Patnitop meadow — the early morning light through the pine trees, the fresh mountain air, and the silence broken only by birdsong is one of the finest ways to begin a day anywhere in Jammu. After a leisurely breakfast, check out and begin the drive back down to Jammu (~80–100 km / 2–2.5 hrs).

    Peer Khoh Cave Temple, Jammu

An ancient cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva near the Tawi River in Jammu — a fitting closing echo of the Shivkhori experience two days earlier. The cave contains naturally occurring rock formations worshipped as Shiva Lingams, and the approach through a series of narrow passages creates a meditative, atmospheric experience. The riverside location and the old banyan trees around the cave add to the serenity. Allow 20–30 minutes.

    Amar Mahal Museum, Jammu

The former winter palace of Raja Amar Singh of the Dogra royal family, built in 1890 in a distinctive French-chateau style on a commanding hilltop above the Tawi River. The palace's red-roofed turrets and yellow stone facade are immediately recognisable from anywhere in Jammu. Now maintained as a museum by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, the collection includes Pahari miniature paintings, Basholi paintings, ivory chess sets, royal hunting trophies, royal portraits, and a remarkable library of ancient Dogra manuscripts. The rooftop terrace of the museum offers one of the finest views of the Tawi River valley and the Shivalik hills. Allow 30–40 minutes.

Depending on your departure schedule, browse Jammu's Gandhi Nagar market for last-minute shopping — Dogra handicrafts, Kashmiri pashmina shawls, local Kalari cheese, Jammu's famous Kesar Halwa, and dry fruits. Transfer to Jammu Tawi Railway Station or Jammu Airport for your onward journey.

Carry home the blessings of Mata Vaishno Devi, the serene power of Shivkhori, and the fresh mountain air of Patnitop. A journey that combines the divine, the natural, and the scenic in one deeply satisfying arc across Jammu. Jai Mata Di.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your Vaishno Devi · Shivkhori · Patnitop tour

This tour is enjoyable throughout the year but different seasons offer different experiences. March–June: Pleasant temperatures at all three destinations; spring flowers at Patnitop; ideal weather for the Vaishno Devi trek. July–September: Lush green landscapes everywhere; Patnitop is at its most verdant; monsoon brings occasional rain on the trek so carry a poncho. October–November: Arguably the finest season — clear post-monsoon skies, cool crisp air, autumn colours at Patnitop and Shivkhori, and Navratri festival atmosphere at Vaishno Devi (September–October = huge crowds; post-Navratri October–November = quieter but equally beautiful). December–February: Snow at Patnitop and Nathatop; a unique winter pilgrimage experience at Vaishno Devi (snow on the trek); Shivkhori accessible year-round. Heaviest snow months (Jan–Feb) can affect Patnitop road access.

Shivkhori is approximately 80 km from Katra (via Ransoo) and about 110 km from Jammu. The drive takes around 2 hours from Katra through the Chenab valley — a scenic route. The base of the cave walk is the village of Pouni, from where it is a 3 km walk or pony ride (approximately 45 minutes on foot) to the cave entrance. The path is well-maintained, gradually ascending, and suitable for most fitness levels. Ponies are available at ₹150–₹250 per person one-way. There are no jeep or vehicle services from Pouni to the cave — only foot and pony access.

Patnitop stands out for its combination of altitude (2,024 m), accessibility (directly on NH44 Jammu–Srinagar highway), natural beauty, and range of activities. Unlike the more commercial Katra or Udhampur, Patnitop has a genuine alpine meadow character — open grasslands, dense pine forests, and a commanding position above the Chenab valley. The Nathatop viewpoint at 2,730 m is one of the finest viewpoints in Jammu division. Patnitop is also a winter sports destination (skiing in January–February), a paragliding site, and offers access to the beautiful Sanasar meadow nearby. As it lies on the Jammu–Srinagar highway, it is easily incorporated into Kashmir tours as a first or last-night stop.

Yes, with appropriate mode-of-transport choices. For Vaishno Devi, senior citizens and young children can use the helicopter (Katra–Sanjichhat), battery car (Katra–Banganga), pony riding, or palki throughout the route — the darshan is fully accessible without trekking. For Shivkhori, the 3 km approach walk is moderate but manageable for most; ponies available. The cave interior does have low passages — seniors with severe mobility issues may find this challenging; they can wait at the cave entrance and have prasad brought out. Patnitop is fully accessible by road; meadow walks are gentle. The hotel and restaurant infrastructure at Katra and Patnitop is good-quality and family-friendly. Inform us of any special requirements at booking.

Yes — Patnitop receives snowfall typically from late December through February, with Nathatop receiving heavier accumulation. The NH44 Jammu–Srinagar highway is generally kept open even in heavy snowfall (the highway authority has extensive snow-clearing equipment), but road access to Patnitop's upper areas may be temporarily suspended after very heavy snowfall. In winter, bring heavy woolens, thermal underlayers, and waterproof shoes. The Vaishno Devi trek in winter involves ice and snow on sections of the route — iron crampons and trekking poles are available for hire at Banganga. The winter Yatra is spiritually charged but physically more demanding. Shivkhori remains accessible year-round. We recommend checking road conditions 48 hours before departure for December–February travel.

For the Vaishno Devi trek: Sturdy trekking shoes (most important), comfortable trekking clothes, light fleece (cool at the Bhawan), rain poncho (July–Sept), small day pack, torch, energy snacks, water bottle, personal medications, photo ID + Yatra Parchi. No leather items inside the cave. For Shivkhori cave: Footwear that can be easily removed (slip-ons or sandals for approach, then barefoot inside cave), warm layer (cave is ~18°C regardless of outside temperature). For Patnitop: Warm jacket, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and sunglasses (UV is strong at altitude). General: Avoid bringing large suitcases — a single medium bag per person is manageable on this itinerary. Cloak rooms are available at Katra and Banganga for storage during the trek. Cash in adequate amounts — ATMs available in Katra and Udhampur but limited near Shivkhori and Patnitop.

Absolutely. This package is a standalone itinerary but it is also an excellent starting segment for a broader Kashmir tour — since Patnitop lies directly on the Jammu–Srinagar highway, you can drive from Patnitop to Srinagar on Day 5 instead of returning to Jammu, and continue into a Srinagar / Gulmarg / Pahalgam extension. Popular extensions include: Vaishno Devi + Shivkhori + Patnitop + Kashmir Paradise (4+3 = 7N8D) or an extended Patnitop stay with a Sanasar and Sudh Mahadev excursion. A Mansar Lake day trip from Jammu (a sacred natural lake associated with the Nagas — excellent birdwatching) can also be added to Day 1 or Day 5. Contact us for customised itineraries.

Jammu: Excellent Jio, Airtel, BSNL 4G. Multiple ATMs. Katra: Good Jio / Airtel / BSNL connectivity. ATMs available. Vaishno Devi trek: Signal available but congested at the Bhawan during peak hours. Inform family of expected return time. Shivkhori / Ransoo / Pouni: Patchy BSNL only — limited connectivity. No ATM near the cave; carry sufficient cash from Katra or Udhampur. Patnitop: Moderate Jio / Airtel connectivity; improves in the main market area. Nearest ATM in Udhampur (30 km). Carry sufficient cash before departing Katra. Our team remains reachable throughout the tour from our Jammu base.
